Why Push For Impeachment?
There is no better time than right now to support the case for impeachment against George Bush and Richard Cheney. There is no better time to stop supporting the myths we tell ourselves and each other on why we, the people, should not act against tyranny and aggression. There is no better time than right now to begin building the case for prosecution of war crimes.
Both parties on the left and right do not even have legitimate arguments against the impeachment of George W. Bush and Richard Cheney, against the prosecution for war crimes in the use of torture and wars of aggression, nor against the wars of aggression themselves. Instead they resort to weak responses designed to further disempower and disenfranchise the American Public, the very same type of rhetoric flying around masquerading as campaign platforms for their parties. "A vote for them is a vote for terrorism" and "A vote for them is a vote for more of the same." The real truth is that the only votes which are neither are votes for impeachment, prosecution and an end to the wars of aggression. To date only a very few vocal individuals are raising this call and it's time to take these brave people seriously.
Why should Dennis Kucinich continue to push for impeachment hearings in congress when Nancy Pelosi seems so deaf to giving him a real voice reflecting our concerns? One of the most important reasons is that world is watching and waiting to see if we, the American People, will do everything within our own means and power to try to defend our own civil liberties. Why would they care to step up to prosecute these obvious criminals when we are not even willing to do so ourselves? If we remain silent on these issues, then we are consenting to their abuses and our apathy gives the appearance of making these actions "legitimate." Our domestic impeachment will strengthen greater efforts to prosecute international crimes in the larger arena.
We need to put an end to excuses that the established order is too deeply entrenched in the hearts and minds of the people to effectively overturn. People are already told that enough in virtually every facet of American culture. They already feel about as helpless and hopeless in the face of lies, intimidation and propaganda as they need ever to feel. What they need is to be greeted with truthful information, logical arguments, empowering speech and a sense of commitment to each other. "Divide and Conquer" has been overplayed as has the bait of empty promises of change and threat of further oppression. Cunning and strategy will never be as powerful as sincerity and authenticity.
Right now, we have the unique opportunity to take advantage of this current administration's arrogance and audacity. Because of these two traits, they have exposed their criminal activities and intentions on a scale unseen for decades. We already have enough evidence to go forward with impeachment and prosecution.
There is no doubt in the mind of humanity that Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo personify torture and prisoner abuses. There is also no doubt that the pretexts for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were entirely fabricated. There is further no doubt that the Department of Homeland Security, the Patriot Act and the War Powers Act are being implemented as efforts to stifle all political dissent in order to further the agenda of globalization. Enough eyes are already opened among the population to begin setting examples of the most obvious perpetrators of these crimes. However, we simply must stop defeating ourselves in our dialogue with the public, those in power and with each other.
